El cortez hotel and casino

{H1}

How did it strike you on arrival?
The El Cortez is Las Vegas’ oldest running casino, having first opened in November of 1941. A few years later, infamous mobster Bugsy Siegel bought the place during his short-lived run on Vegas. The gangster connection is long gone (a family-owned business has run the property since the 1960s), but a lot of the hotel remains as it was during Bugsy’s time, including its turquoise neon sign. This retro-style makes for a quirky, unusual hotel stay–– not to mention some sweet Instagram photo opps.

Nice. What’s the crowd like?
It’s a mix of people doing Vegas on the cheap, and folks who are seeking a more authentic experience than what’s typically found on the Strip.

The good stuff: Tell us about your room.
There are so-called “Vintage Rooms” on the hotel’s second floor, which are supposed to look exactly like they did when Bugsy Siegel owned the place (with the exception of a few modern amenities). The Cabana Suites, which are located in a different tower in the back, are the rooms to book. Despite the name, there are no actual cabanas here. These rooms have a Palm Springs mid-century modern vibe with bright green walls, tufted white leather headboards, and funky custom furniture.

We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?
Comfortable!

How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?
There are not many in-room amenities here beyond standard ones like hairdryer, television and bath toiletries, but there is a Keurig machine and the coffee is included in the amenities fee. So is bottled water.

Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.
The bathrooms in the Cabana Suites are quite modern with marble subway tiles on the wall and a geometric black and white tile floor. The shower is fully enclosed, but the sink doesn’t have much room for guests to store their personal toiletries. The bath amenities are a no-name organic and natural brand.

Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?
The WiFi is included in the $14.95 per day (plus tax) amenities fee.

Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.
El Cortez has a casino (obviously) and a handful of restaurants and bars, the most popular being Bugsy’s 1941, a breakfast, lunch and dinner spot. There’s a fitness center in the Cabana Suites building, and a beauty salon and Happy Feet reflexology massage spot in the main building.

What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?
It can be hard to sleep at night with all the noise outside.

Bottom line: worth it, and why?
Rates at El Cortez are usually very reasonable, even if you “splurge” for the Cabana Suites.
